Purimgifts 2020 Letter

Hey gifter! It's almost time for my absolute favourite Jewish holiday! I hope you can enjoy it with me!

I've also made 2 requests, but I've smooshed them into one letter, so feel free to read my wants and DNWs before just scrolling down to the fandoms you want to write/art for.

Fandoms

Good Omens (TV)

Oh Gosh, I love this show so much! I was a huge HUGE fan of the book when I first discovered it in high school and the adaptation did it so well!

My gushing aside, I think there are a lot of fun places to go with Good Omens and this exchange. Obviously, Good Omens has plenty of badass ladies (Anathema, War, and Pepper) who I'd love love love to read about! And I love the idea of Aziraphale and Crowley celebrating the Jewish holidays! Show me an ineffable seder, purim spiel, or Hanukkah party! Bonus points if Warlock, Newt and Anathema, and the Them are there!

Probably the thing that I love most about the show is the way it handles gender for angels and demons! I especially love how fluid Crowley's gender presentation is, and I'd love to see a fic exploring Crowley's relationship with his feminine side. This applies to all the other angels and demons as well, but I'm especially interested in Crowley because his gender presentation swings so wildly throughout history. I think there's so much meat to chew on for this show, so just have fun with it!

Call Me By Your Name (Film)

*vibrates* I literally love this movie, y'all. It's the first movie that I've seen that has queer, Jewish characters and deals with both their queerness and their Jewish identities!

Any character exploration with Oliver's relationship with his father and his finance would be dope as hell. How does Oliver feel on his wedding day? Is Elio actually there or does Oliver just seeing him out of the corner of his eye? How does he justify marrying a woman he doesn't truly love?

Some future fics with Elio would be fun too. Does he end up chasing after Oliver? What does he do to try and get over him? How is his first year at university with all this shit hanging over his head? I think there's plenty of possibilities!

Finally, I actually quite love the women in this film. I know it's just their actresses breathing life into characters that were nonentities in the novel, but I can't help but love the characters that have been filled into the cracks! Marzia and Annella Pearlman are definitely particularly interesting to me. Marzia seems to be extremely emotionally intelligent. Does she sense something is off about Elio after Oliver's phone call? What can she do to try and console him? What does she think of Oliver for doing this? As for Annella, I think she's once again one of the most emotionally intelligent characters in the film. She sees what Elio thinks of Oliver before either of them do! She and Samuel are constantly pulling the strings in the background to get them together because she knows they're important to each other. I'd love to see her point of view for that summer: how she notices Elio and Oliver's feelings for each other and why she decides to get them together.

There's a lot to work with here, and I'd love to see anything you choose to write for this fandom!

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

In this house, we love She-Ra. Send tweet.

Seriously, I could read fic for any of these characters infinitely, so I'll just ramble a bit about my favs so you get some ideas.

Adora is amazing. I love watching her try and figure out her place in this world, how to do the right thing while being riddled with guilt over her past with the Horde. The decision she makes at the end of this season (which I will not spoil for you) is poignant and powerful. I think the thing I love most about Adora is that, no matter what life throws at her, she always tries her best to do what's right. I ship Adora with Glimmer and Catra, so if that's something you'd like to explore, I encourage it.

Glimmer's arc in Season 4 is poignant, an example of what happens when grief and uncertainty and anger clouds our judgement of what's right and wrong. Anything exploring that is certainly of interest to me. I'm also Weak for any Glimmer & Bow friendship, in addition to my Adora ships.

Catra is definitely my fav. I'm such a sucker for complex villains, and Catra's anger and pain speak volumes to me as an abuse victim. And her arc in the newest season is just *chef's kiss* (If you can't tell, Season 4 is my fav so far lol). Seeing her go mad with power as a way to shield herself from future harm, pushing away everything that has ever meant something to her... it's poignant and tragic. The show does a great job of showing that, even though Catra's actions are justified to her, they still hurt people and aren't healthy for her either. She's complex and well-written without either of those things being used to dodge blame, which is a hard tightrope to walk.

Scorpia is Best Princess and gives great hugs. 'Nuff said. Any exploration of her relationship with her princess status would be fun too, but mostly I want to see her surrounded by friends and being loved. Because she deserves it.

Double Trouble is not a lady, but they're still worth mentioning. Hearing characters use they/them pronouns super casually was amazing, and learning that they're played by an actual NB person was transcendent! They're also just super cute as Flutterina. 10/10 character.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

God, the women in this show are amazing! Each one is their own version of "strong," with distinct personalities and desires. You could write a fic about any of the FMAB ladies and I would be happy, so I'll do what I did for She-Ra and tell you about my favs.

Winry Rockbell is the only valid waifu. I love the way she works as a counterbalance for Edward's anger and aggression, without ever feeling like a symbol of virtue rather than a person. We see her get furious, her crying is always justified, and the hard choices she has to make feel earned. Even her eventual romance with Edward feels like a natural evolution of their dynamic. Also: I am Weak for lady mechanics and her passion for automail is infectious! I ship her with Paninya in addition to Ed, so that's another thing to consider.

I love Riza Hawkeye just... so much! She's a stone-cold badass who kicks ass and takes names, but underneath that exterior is someone who clearly cares deeply for the people around her. The episode where she reflects on the war in Ishval is one of my favourites and is full of so many great character moments for her and Mustang. A fic about that would certainly get MANY brownie points from me, but it's probably a bit off from the tone of the exchange. I ship her with Mustang, and I love her dog.

God, I'm gay for Olivier Armstrong. They managed to make a female character who was a confident and charismatic leader while also constantly reminding the audience that she cares deeply for the troops at Fort Briggs. I also love how she's one of very few people in power who genuinely care about what Ed and Al have to say and is willing to even put herself on the line once she learns the truth. She's incredibly cunning, but always has the best interests of her troops in mind. She's dope as hell and I love her.

Envy is once again nonbinary and not technically a woman, but they get a shoutout for being my favourite homunculus! The show gets so creative with all the different transformations Envy has, and I just think they're neat!

Harry Potter

Look, I know Jowling Krowling is a TERF (and not a very good writer), but I can't help my nostalgia for Harry Potter. I 110% encourage you to make ANY of the Harry Potter characters trans just to give her a nice, solid middle finger. The world of Harry Potter may have been concieved by a transphobe but we, the fans, get to decide how it looks to us.

First things first, I'd LOVE to see some Jewish Weasleys! The Borrow just seems like such a fun place to have a seder or even a Shabbat dinner! Some post-canon fic where Harry (as Ginny's fiance or just as a family friend) has his first seder there and feels the love and warmth he's always deserved but never known would give me Feelings. Also just some fun antics with Fleur adjusting to life as Weasley would be appreciated. Maybe Fleur is a Nice Jewish Girl who has been to plenty of seders, but none of them are ever quite this hectic.

Honestly, you could make any character in Harry Potter (save the Dursleys) Jewish and probably have plenty of fun with it!

My favourite HP ladies are detailed below. Do with them what you will!

Tonks is special to me tbh. I've always loved the headcanon that she's nonbinary, so a fic about her struggle with her femininity could be pretty interesting. I'm not a huge fan of her ending up with Lupin (they're both so queer coded, it feels like completionist shipping), but their friendship could be really awesome! They're both sort of the "odd ones out" in the order along with Sirius, so Sirius and Lupin more or less looking at her and going "this is our queer daughter now" could be pretty fun. I think they'd all "get" each other in a way most of the older Order members couldn't.

How can one describe the depth of my love for Luna Lovegood? She's another character that I related to quite a bit, especially since she was always considered unusual by her peers. I love trans girl Luna (especially trans lesbian Luna) and if you'd like to write her on the autism spectrum, I'd encourage it as well! I feel like Xenophilius would have been accepting of his daughter no matter what, and I'd love to see Luna have a loving home where she can be herself.

Hermione is a childhood favourite because I too was the smart girl with the frizzy hair who no one seemed to like. And as Hermione grows up, she becomes genuinely scary (see: her curse on the Dumbledore's Army parchment in the books). I love the idea of a female character whose main weakness is her lack of emotional intelligence (which is also why I love contrasting her with Ron, who is a less powerful wizard but is much better with people). I feel they did her a bit dirty in the movies, making her not only a clever witch but also giving her a lot of Ron's more poignant character beats, so I'd like to see a properly scary book!Hermione, should you choose to write her. Black Hermione is a common headcanon, and I certainly welcome it! I'd also love to see a Jewish Hermione who gets upset with the lack of Hannukah decor around the Holiday season at Hogwarts and insists on being able to host a passover seder because that feels very in character for her.

Also I'm a big Ginny/Luna shipper, but I haven't gotten far enough in my Harry Potter reread to have any strong opinions about Ginny, since she's not in the movies all that often. I don't remember that much about her other than that she's a jock, but I support her right to be gay!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I'm making a separate section for FBWTFT because I have a lot of Feelings about the women of the two most recent films. A lot of those feelings are anger and disappointment, but I do love many of the characters in these stories. Once again, make anyone you want trans because it's still a Rowling property.

First of all, the Goldstein sisters are Jewish as Hell! This is the hill that I will die on. I'd LOVE to see what 1920's wizarding holidays look like. How does magic change the way these familiar traditions look? Bonus points if Jacob is also Jewish and is blown away by magical conveniences (self-lighting shabbat candles, anyone?). I'd also love any sort of exploration  of Queenie and Tina's relationship, as well as Tina's relationship with Newt. I'd prefer that the ending of CoG wrt Queenie be ignored because it really pissed me off, but other than that, show me what you've got!

Now, there are plenty of other women in FB, so I'm just gonna rattle off my favs again.

Nagini was done DIRTY imo, so I'd love to see her character explored more. How did she end up in the circus? How did she and Credence grow to become friends? What is their relationship even like???? I'd prefer not to have her and Credence be involved romantically (in my head, Credence is only interested in men). I've always headcanoned their friendship as wlw/mlm solidarity, since I also headcanon Nagini as bi. I ship her with Leta (they are adorable. Their ship name is Snakestrange).

Speaking of Leta Lestrange, she was also done dirty in CoG. I love the relationship the movie built up between her and Newt, and I have to wonder why she ended up with Theseus instead. Also (if you're comfortable writing it), I'd love an exploration of what it's like to be a mixed-race woman of colour in 1920's London, especially as a wizard from a prominent family. How does the rest of the wizarding world treat her? Does it contribute to her eventual friendship with Newt? I ship her with Nagini, Theseus, Newt, Tina, and as an OT3 with Newt and Tina.

Seraphina Picquery and Madame Zhou are also favourites of mine (despite their limited screentime). What's it like being a woman of colour in wizarding politics? I also think they'd be one hell of a powercouple, but that's just me lol. (I also ship Seraphina with Graves and Tina. Don't ask me why).

Finally, please tell me what happened to Modesty. She just completely disappears between movies and She Deserves Happiness. Does she end up getting raised by some generous wizarding family? Does Credence end up caring for her? Where is she during ALL of CoG?

I also love the idea of Newt or Credence as trans women. If that's something you'd like to write, I'd love their names to be Artemis and Claire respectively.

Wuff, I think that's everything! Hopefully somewhere in this massive post, you can find something that sparks joy! Thank you so much for signing up for Purimgifts and I can't wait to see what you come up with!
