Resident Evil: Requiem Full Review

bemused_writer: Beleaguered man in rain (Leon Kennedy 2)
[personal profile] bemused_writer
I wrapped up this game a few days ago, and I have since plummeted into a full-blown RE obsession, so it's safe to say I enjoyed it. Some of my critiques of the start remain the same, but once Grace was in Rhodes Hill proper things improved immensely.

I figure I'll go over some of my critiques and predictions from the last two entries, and see what holds up and what doesn't.

Spoilers abound... )

Status of the WIPs

vriddy: christmas gnome (gnome)
[personal profile] vriddy

I... think I'm caught up with Dreamwidth? If you were expecting a reply from me, let me know because I missed it! The exception is the replies to my latest K-9 translation post because I'm saving them for the next time I'm bursting with the need to talk about K-9 with someone and can't find any victim gentleperson to satisfy the hunger.

Whoops ended up talking about K-9 anyway. How does this keep happening??? )

Anyway, writing! WIPs! Status!! I met my GYWO goal in January and February, but sacrificed March to the editing gods. So I've written... 288 words so far 😤😤 Unless I get possessed I am NOT meeting my monthly goal, but that's okay. I've got more stuff to edit!! And some fics ready to post, too.

Edited and ready to go (except for maybe a grammar check and/or... a title orz):

  • Wind Breaker OT4, Chapter 4
  • Chapter 1 for the K-9 LeopardTree fic (it got LONG!)
  • K-9 triple drabble about Ren, because in canon she always seems to wait for injured teenage girls to wake up at the hospital, even at great personal cost (that is, nicotine withdrawal), and I find that interesting
  • Spring Thunder rescue fic about Kagaribi & Co going to Mozu's rescue, together with Mozu's super smart cat :D
  • A BNHA NagantMiruko fic I wrote nearly 3 years ago for an event that turned out not to happen, and I think it might be time to move on

Written, needs editing:

  • Wind Breaker OT5, final chapter
  • K-9 LeopardTree, chapters 2-5

Half-written:

  • Blaaah a bunch but this is a month of editing and I'm not particularly thinking about them

3 things today

tozka: lady lovely locks title character (lady lovely locks close-up)
[personal profile] tozka
1. I found a tiny snail on the wall INSIDE the house. How did it get there? Where is it going?

2. What I thought was a weird-looking vase revealed itself to be a crystal singing bowl. I can see why enthusiasts are SO enthusiastic about it. The sound sort of vibrates upwards and it's almost a physical feeling once it hits.

3. One week until I leave Chichester and head to Cardiff! If you have any recommendations for charity shops, used bookstores, small museums or other interesting places to while away time, let me know.

I did a first round of editing to the end, and while in my head the last chapter was clunky (probably because I've changed direction on it about 3 times now), actually I was giggling and hiding my mouth behind my hand through most of it so I think it's okay :D The final sentence/paragraph however is clunky and doesn't work super well, but I have a bit of time to figure out something else.

Each chapter has a different PoV as each character figure some things out, and I like the story and how they all gravitate toward each other. However, the tone and narration are a bit distant, maybe a bit flat. It's the same mistake? flaw? that I saw in my OT3/multi-polyship Kn8 fic, where I was also spending a lot of brain power on "How would these characters fit together?". Maybe this is expected for the first few fics with a new ship. When I compare with DabiHawks for which I've written well over 100 fics (and over 200 with Hawks!), obviously I can't nail every nuance and subtlety of their emotions as easily. Yet. Anyway I still think there's good in there and I'm happy I wrote this :D I enjoy these characters so much.

Acting on instinct | Wind Breaker | Sakura/Nirei/Suou/Kiryuu/Tsugeura | 2.8k words (WIP, 3/5) | rated T

Summary: Something shifted for them all in that moment at Kiryuu's house. They all felt it. But Kiryuu was missing for it, so they can't do anything about it.

Not yet.

I decided to finally DNF this one, at about 55% of the way through. It was just getting too repetitive, and the next two chapters explicitly was about how to build a 'truthseeking pod' or something and I was just done.

There are a lot of good ideas here, but I'm not really someone who needs to hear most of them. Most of the lessons talked about in the book are things that my parents already taught me, or that I learned through my own experience. As someone who has examined the foundation of nearly every belief that I had, and then decided that those beliefs were based on falsehoods— as someone who grew up in mormonism, confronted the evidence that mormonism was not true, and rejected mormonism as a result— very little of what this book talks about is new to me. The ideas are mostly sound, to be sure, but they aren’t useful or helpful to me because I’ve already internalized them to the degree that I’m aware of them affecting my decision making. I won’t say I’m perfect at it, but the goal of the book seems largely to call attention to irrational decision processes and what causes them, because awareness of the problem helps in fixing the problem. I’m already aware, and have in fact already made some very difficult decisions in favor of truth seeking. It's a continuous process, but this book is aimed more towards 'beginners' in this area, which I am not.

It's also more aimed at business people and feels more self-helpy than I prefer. This book did make me think about some things, but as I said above, it mostly told me things that I already was aware of. I did like the idea of explicitly treating decisions as bets on probabilities.

Honestly what compelled me the most was the fleeting bits of discussion about poker strategy; this book has piqued my interest in poker and now I want to learn how to play. It's not a poker book, to be clear, that was just what ended up being the most interesting part to me.

I don't disagree with most things this book says, but it just felt very basic to me. Maybe there's some CEO out there who really needs to hear that sometimes you get lucky without doing anything to deserve it, or that you can get a negative outcome without doing anything wrong, but I for one learned those things from my parents long ago. I'm glad that this book exists for the people who need to learn from it; I'm just not one of those people.

Would I recommend this book? Maybe to an aspiring CEO who never learned how to be introspective. I think most people, though, will get about as much out of the book as they would get out of a short summary of it.

Unfortunately, not an auspicious start to my audiobook journey. Now I need to figure out what to listen to on my work commute instead...

Separation of Church and Parking Lot

How can we repurpose church parking lots for the better?

But unlike the bank in the bottom left of the first map, whose lot is never full—even predictably so—and where one might justify changing the parking requirements to accommodate this phenomenon, churches are assembly halls. Once or twice a week, they do fill up.

And unlike the banks, churches, mosques, temples, and other houses of worship are civic spaces. These spaces are where neighbors come together to share meals and company, or where folks from dispersed corners of a city unite under a common purpose. If a city lacks the density to begin with, and driving to church is the obvious option, there is no good argument for denying a church its parking—they use it!

But a dilemma lies in the five or six days of the week in which these lots sit empty. Churches and other houses of worship are amenities within neighborhoods, but blocks of street-facing parking lots are the opposite. They sit unused for about 250 to 300 days of the year.

Safety

Scientists warn that a certain type of earthquake is much more destructive and being overlooked

In a typical quake, a rupture spreads along a fault at a speed slower than shear waves, seismic waves that shake the ground sideways. A supershear rupture outruns those waves, so energy piles up at the rupture tip and forms a sharp shock front.

That shock front is why these quakes can be so damaging. A nearby town can get hammered first by the high speed rupture front, then by the trailing waves in what Elbanna describes as a “double strike”.

Wind can be Dangerous

cornerofmadness: (Do not want)
[personal profile] cornerofmadness
So the winds are over 60 mph and my parents' shingles are in the yard. Needless to say Dad is pissed. This is a 50 year roof (about 20 years in) but the tar proved to be dried out and this wind took the whole of the roof from what we can tell.

Naturally my 83 y.o. father decides he must go on the roof to try to stop this. He doesn't want help. I'm like fine. And when you blow off....

He didn't. Blow off the roof nor stop the zipper effect. You can still hear the nails pulling free even after 5 hours every time the wind picks back up. At first it was just 5 shingles. By dark it was 3 dozen. Better hope it doesn't begin to rain before an insurance adjuster gets out here. Two hours on hold with the insurance company waiting for someone pick up ended with the call disconnecting at their end.

Before that we had spent the afternoon with my favorite cousin my dad's age in her senior living center. That was very nice. We barely made it home before the wind.

I tried to figure out if my insurance pays for jardiance and dexcom but now it's decided my password isn't my password and any attempt to get it to email me a password reset has failed.

And I called my endocrinologist this morning to see if I could come 30 minutes late (because she's always an h our late anyhow) they were going to call me back. Never did. the problem? They put the appoint on the only day I can't be there without canceling work. And I could have sworn it was monday. It was SUPPOSED to be monday.

I was researching something for a Hazbin Hotel story (not the one below) and I needed to see who was the first woman newscaster in America. The answer was Dorothy Fuldheim in 1947 which is way before I imagined. (Mostly I was double checking to see if Vox could have had a female co anchor in the time period S2 depicted)

I thought she was interesting so have DOrothy's history for Women's History month. You can read about her
here.

So for the fannish 50 part of this, here's my story and my recs

Title: Not Licensed For This

Summary: Angel finds himself caught between a feuding Vox and Val and tries to help them be better partners. What else could he do? An annoyed Val was a dangerous Val and Angel wasn’t putting up with it today.

Rating: teen

Notes:Written for Sarajaye in the three sentence ficathon for the prompt Hazbin Hotel, Angel+Vox/Valentino, he unwittingly ends up playing couples therapist for them.

This was also written for the [community profile] allbingo prompt of tension and for [personal profile] spikesgirl58’s 6 word prompt challenge. The six words were Spirit, Jump, Bracket, Detector, Baby, & Pudding

For some reason I set this pre-season. Just seemed like an interesting time to explore a little.

My Friend Elle

fabrisse: (Default)
[personal profile] fabrisse
I've mentioned Elle in other posts. [https://fabrisse.dreamwidth.org/2016/12/04/ is the most important one] We've known each other since high school. She would hate me for stating that we graduated in 1979, even if I am keeping her pseudonymous. She's rarely on time for anything. She has an opinion on everything -- which granted is a shared trait. She regularly frustrates me, but she has been my most faithful and generous friend for 48 years (and that's a number that will kick a person in the head).

Elle called me on Wednesday because she's having surgery next week. About a month ago, she called her dentist to mention a sore on her tongue which hadn't gone away. They had her at an oral surgeon's office very quickly, and the sore was excised. It was also sent for biopsy.

It was a squamous cell carcinoma. They think they got it all, but the nature of squamous cell means that they can't be sure. A larger area will be removed on Tuesday, and the surgeons will check for lymph node involvement. If they find it, Elle may end up having her tonsils (and possibly adenoids) removed. The surgery is supposed to be in and out on the same day.

Our friend Kay will be looking after her. Elle can't talk for a week to ten days and will be on heavy painkillers for that long. I can't imagine her keeping quiet for that long, especially with what's going on in today's world.

Keep her in your thoughts, please. We've known each other since high school in Brussels, and there's literally no one else in my life, other than Sis, whom I've known as long.
