The Great Supernatural Rewatch (Also Please Send Recs?)

So, my roommate in University is literally the greatest! She respects my pronouns, and we share so many interests! She's probably going to graduate this spring, which is a bit of a bummer, but living with her has been SO nice!

Anyway, one of those interests that we have in common is Supernatural. We were both getting super nostalgic for it lately, so we've actually started rewatching it on Netflix through my PS4! We've only gotten through the first couple episodes, but oh my god, Jensen and Jared were absolute BABIES in season 1! And Dean's voice is so high pitched!

I've just been nostalgic for 2012 fandom lately. With all this "cringe culture is dead"/Twilight renaissance stuff, I've been kind of reclaiming my "cringy" interests. And, I don't know, 2012 Superwholock fandom just seemed like such a good time! We were all on the same page about enjoying ships and all this "anti shipper" stuff wasn't really as big as it is now. It felt like such a fun community, and I've just really missed it lately. I often feel like such an island in my fandoms, especially since I write for so many of them. But, I don't know, I miss not having to justify myself all the time to strangers online who call me a pedophile because I liked Call Me By Your Name or I ship Hartwin or whatever...

Anyway, I've been feeling SUPER nostalgic for Destiel lately, so if you guys could send some recs my way in the comments, I'd appreciate that. Self recs, old classics, new favourites... I just want to read about my boys!

Oh, man, early Supernatural is such a trip. You don't notice how much deeper their voices got until you go back to first season and go, "Babies!"

I'm sure I've mentioned these before because I'm one of those obnoxious people whose always mentioning her fic, but since you specifically asked…

Cult-de-Sac = got some complaints that there's no actual sex just lots of flirting, but it's a funny casefic and it's my second-highest kudos on AO3 (like most of my stories are in the 20/30-kudos range and this broke a thousand)
Life Inside = short, pre-Destiel story (Dean isn't even in this one, but Jimmy and Castiel sort stuff out so you can imagine it setting up future Destiel scenarios)
Raspberry Cliché = actual Destiel story with a sex scene and everything, but the story takes the long way around so it's not going to feel like a Destiel story for the first part of it

All of my stuff is a mix of serious and funny so sometimes you get goofy jokes where you weren't expecting them and sometimes I throw in something sad or upsetting when you were expecting silly fluff, so mild warning for the muddled tone.

I know right? I love the convoluted secret identities with rock star names and fun one-off episodes! I feel like they really start to disappear post-Season 5 and it's all about fighting the Big Bad, but that's just me. And also they were so young, holy shit!

I've always been grumpy about Big Bad plots and season-long story arcs even on other shows. It's just such a trope that everyone's got an arch nemesis who can never be defeated until the final episode of the season (if that). And thus if a show goes on for any length of time, it gets repetitive.

And if a storyline is a dud, you're stuck with it for a whole season.

I've always wished they'd do more stand alone episodes. (I was always rooting for the Monster-of-the-Week plots on X-Files too. The big plot episodes were just confusing and have no re-watch value.)

I like the overarching plots generally, but I think that so many fun shenanigans and great character moments come out of the Monster-of-the-Week episodes. It's always the balance from seasons 1-5 that's kind of my ideal. Then once they introduced the Leviathans, EVERY episode is about them. And the Leviathans aren't even cool!

Although the Leviathan season is the one that blessed us with the episode where Dean got beaten up by a little girl in evil ballet slippers which remains one of my favorite fight scenes.

*little girl kicks Dean in the head*
little girl: "Sorry!"
*Dean gets kicked in the head again even harder*
little girl: "Sorry!"

The scene isn't even a full minute long, but it makes me smile every time.

Yeah, season 6 had some great fillers (I think that was the same season that gave us The French Mistake?), but you'll notice that the best episodes were the ones that had nothing to do with the Leviathans.

My personal favourite post-season 5 filler is when Balthazar un-sinks the Titanic because he hates Celine Dion, but that's neither here nor there.

Bwahaha! I had completely forgotten that that was Balthazar's motivation.

And, yes, in general, my favorite episodes never have anything to do with the greater story arc of the season and sometimes my favorite scenes don't even have that much to do with the rest of the episode. It's just those little quirky character moments that kept me watching the later seasons even when the story arcs were duds.
